Using the Martingale Betting System When Playing Roulette
Roulette is a game that has been around for generations. It has captured the minds of many mathematicians that have tried to develop ways to defeat the game. Dating back to the 18th century France there have been many betting strategies developed to defeat the game of Roulette. The most famous of which is known as the Martingale Betting System.
The Martingale system (also known as the double-up method) is actually pretty simple. You start with a one unit bet on one of the even money bets, usually red/black. You want to start the betting as low as possible. For our example, we’ll say $5.
Gamblers use this method in different ways. Some systems will recommend waiting until a small pattern has developed, such as three blacks in a row, to begin your betting. Once three blacks come up in a row, we would wager $5 on red. If we win we simply collect the winnings and wait for another three in a row. If we lose, we double our bet. The betting pattern for $5 would be $5, $10, $20, $40, $80, etc. The theory being that the red or black can’t go that many times in a row without the other color coming up.
The reason so many people fall for this system has to do with the fact that in theory this is a fool-proof method. However, when used in a casino the method does not hold up. The fact is red or black can come up 15 or 20 times in a row and it’s not that rare of an occurrence. When it does the system falls apart because number one most people don’t have the money to keep doubling their money, but even assuming that they do there is a maximum bet that is allowed to be placed. If it goes red 15 times in a row and you are betting black, you will reach the table limit and you will lose a lot of money. Just in case you were wondering, the highest recorded number of times the same color has come up in a row is 39 in the Casino Monte Carlo in Monaco.
